Do rainfall
amounts in the winter affect the blooming of bluebonnets in the spring?
What should we be looking for in rainfall
amounts?
Rainfall amounts in
Texas can be quite variable. For example, the average yearly rainfall for
Austin (at Camp Mabry) is 33.42 inches. The rainfall from October 2002 to
April 2003 was 20.46 inches and there was a very good bloom. The rainfall
from October 2003 to April of 2004 was 17.01 inches and again a good
bloom. Currently the rainfall from October 2005 to January of 2006 was 4
inches. Lets all cross our fingers.
So, where do we stand
for the bluebonnets for spring of 2006? The rainfall from October 2005
thru January of 2006 is 4 inches. Now keep in mind we are only calculating
the past 4 months. We still have February, March and April to get the much
more needed rain. Another discouraging note, according to the National
Weather Service, we've only received a total of 22.33 inches of rain for
the entire year of 2005; that is a full 11.09 inches below
average.
