Julia,

It’s February here in Texas, I think.

This has been the warmest winter I can ever remember. So warm and sunny in fact that nature is tricking my grass into growing and myself into early spring cleaning. I spent the entire week cleaning up my website. I had no idea how much work I had to do until I really got in there and looked at it. What a mess. However, it’s done and it looks beautiful. If ya’ll have any suggestions for my website or this newsletter, please drop me a line. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your support!

Turning the camera on my own Family!

We were lucky enough to get our whole family together over the holidays, and of course, I drug them into the studio to get our picture taken. It seems the older your family gets the more spread out they become. I think having your family portrait taken should be a relaxed endeavor. It should reflect who the family is, not what someone is trying to get them to look like. We’re a very casual family; I think this picture represents our true nature very well. I’m proud to say, Tyler my wonderful stepson took this picture. I love it. He used his Canon Powershot with a trusty remote.

Now that's what I call family fun!

Do rainfall amounts in the winter affect the blooming of bluebonnets in the spring? What should we be looking for in rainfall amounts?

Rainfall amounts in Texas can be quite variable. For example, the average yearly rainfall for Austin (at Camp Mabry) is 33.42 inches. The rainfall from October 2002 to April 2003 was 20.46 inches and there was a very good bloom. The rainfall from October 2003 to April of 2004 was 17.01 inches and again a good bloom. Currently the rainfall from October 2005 to January of 2006 was 4 inches. Lets all cross our fingers.

So, where do we stand for the bluebonnets for spring of 2006? The rainfall from October 2005 thru January of 2006 is 4 inches. Now keep in mind we are only calculating the past 4 months. We still have February, March and April to get the much more needed rain. Another discouraging note, according to the National Weather Service, we've only received a total of 22.33 inches of rain for the entire year of 2005; that is a full 11.09 inches below average.

You can find out more about bluebonnets by clicking on the appropriate link in the favorite links section of this newsletter. You can also call the Texas Department of Transportation Hotline at 800-452- 9292 for blooming updates and additional information on where the best blooming bluebonnet trails are located.
Mother's Day is just around the corner...

Having family pictures taken for Mom is a great way to tell her you love her and to give her a gift that will last a life time. Gift Certificates are available if you are interested in having the whole family involved, or you can surprise her with a framed picture on Mother's Day of just the kids. Wouldn't it be nice to have this years gift ready before Mother's Day!

How can I add flare to an otherwise dull picture?

Although this picture is charming, it is technically a disaster. It lacks so many things and I refuse to list them all individually. The main problem is subject proportion. Beckster (the dog) is too small and blends into his surroundings. This unfortunate circumstance will drain even the strongest charm out of your family photos. Here is a wonderful way to remedy this situation. As you can see, we have added a bit of flare back into the picture and helped Beckster regain his place of importance by de- emphasizing everything else in the picture (taking out all the color) and emphasizing Beckster by leaving in his color. This is a very easy thing to do in Adobe Photoshop.

Send me an e-mail if you are interested in the easy "How to" instructions.

Photography is fun, no matter which side of the camera you're on!

This months grammar helper was my fiance' Paul Beck. Hooray for Paul for all his help and all his patience. Paul is one of the main people who calms me down when I can't figure out what I'm doing.

Warmest regards,
